Muah AI 2024 Review: The AI Chat With an Old-School Twist

If you're not happy with your AI companion, just open the Companion Settings page and make some tweaks. In your next conversation, she will adapt to the changes made and “grow” as a “person.” Everything is possible with the right prompt.

Supported by an enthusiastic online community of AI lovers, Muah AI is a business based in California, which is at the forefront of the future of AI. Muah AI features three monthly and annual VIP memberships, but free users can still get a lot out of it.

Muah AI Overview

One of the first things you should know about Muah AI is that, even though it looks like a classic AI girlfriend chat, its focus is more on the AI customization part than on the girlfriend part per se. What does this mean?

This means that, for you to explore Muah AI's full potential, you will have to work with AI. In essence, Muah AI is a platform for continuously shaping and re-shaping an AI companion, not for getting a quick after-hours chat (even though you can do that too).

Muah AI may be all about the chat, but the real magic happens on the Companion Settings page, which has enough presets and prompt-based tools for users to create a realistic, extremely nuanced, and emotionally dense companion.

Setting Up a Muah AI Account

To set up an account on Muah AI, you need to log in to the site or app and then customize your first companion. Skipping your first companion customization is not recommended.

Step 1: Select Your Login

1. Open your browser and go to the official site.
2. Select your preferred login method from the list;
3. Start customizing your first companion.

Step 2: Customize Your Companion

1. Click on [Companion Settings]

2. Select your companion. Black-and-white companions (such as our lovely Nurse) aren't accessible to free members;

3. Select your companion's style of photo and vocal expression. You can browse through different styles, including anime;

4. Enter text prompts describing key personality traits of your companion;

5. Press either [Save and chat] or “Chat without saving” at the bottom of the page and get ready for the very first chat with your companion.

How Does Muah AI Work?

After setting up an account in Muah AI, which involves creating your first companion, you can chat with the generated AI via an old-school-looking chat window. Here I am, saying “Hello” to my shy girlfriend Jane, not waiting one second before asking her for a picture:

While chatting with Jane, I realized that there's not much to know about how the Muah AI website and app work; the only option is to minimize the window and customize the companion, which brings me back to the Companion Settings page we've seen before.

So, I revisited the homepage and clicked on “Learn how to play,” on the right bottom corner, to access the Intro Guide and learn more about what you can do with Muah AI.

What Can You Do With Muah AI?

The Intro Guide was perfect to shed some light on what's possible to do with Muah AI and on what's the best way of asking things from my companion. So you don't have to go through the tutorial yourself, here's a summary of what I learned:

• The prompt “Send photo of…” can be as descriptive and detailed as desired;
• It's possible to send photos to my companion and have her react to them;
• I can ask my companion to imitate anything with the prompt “Please act like you are…”
• My companion will send my voice samples if I use words such as “Speak” and “Narrate;”
• I can use the prompt “Remember…” to make my companion keep track of important information;
• The prompt “Restart123” resets my companion's memory;
• Muah AI supports multiple languages aside from English (Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean) and even knows what emojis are;
• I can play text-based games such as Kiss, Marry, Kill and Truth or Dare with my companion;
• My companion will sometimes not want to discuss uncomfortable topics with me.

Going through the Intro Guide tutorial and following through with some of the suggested recommendations helped me make the most of Muah AI's chat and have a lot more fun with my companion.

Make no mistake: Muah AI isn't one of those AI services in which you need to get a premium subscription to access fundamental features. You can do a lot with it without paying, but there are still some valuable advantages for VIP members.

What Makes Muah AI a Good Choice?

The ideal user of Muah AI is someone who's simultaneously looking for companionship online and who's interested in generating AI characters as complex as possible. But Muah AI really has something to everyone! Here's what makes it such a good choice:

Surprisingly Powerful Companion Engine

There's one reason why Muah AI wants you to keep going back to its Companion Settings page: because that's where things get heavy!

While the page can be easily navigated by people who aren't interested in AI, its sweetly short set of options and prompt boxes ends up being surprisingly powerful. It's no coincidence there's a whole Reddit community dedicated to learning more about Muah AI's engine.

The prompt boxes are particularly important for shaping communication with companions. Notice how they're less focused on my companion's looks and social traits (jobs, marital status, and so forth), and more on aspects of our communication:

If you ignore my clumsy, non-imaginative prompts (“That time we chatted online,” really?) and consider the full potential of these customization options, that's when you get how powerful Muah AI's Companion Settings can be.

Highly Detailed Images and Audio

While other AI girlfriend services make you pay for AI-generated photos and audio, Muah AI loves making your favorite pictures come true on a free membership. The same goes for audio clips.

Jane, my shy girlfriend, had no trouble at all following my strict instructions regarding her black-dress photo in the park. Before, I asked her for a short audio sample, which she submitted to me as easily.

The photos and audio generated in Muah AI's chat are limited to one companion and one vocal expression, but it's always possible to change these parameters on the Companion Settings page.

Immersive Conversations

The Muah AI chat is also perfect for immersive conversations. These are highly influenced by how companions are customized, but even my simple Jane is capable of cheering me up in a moment of distress:

In my experience, Jane was able to keep up with the conversation and understand everything I said without a problem. She did focus a lot on us being together, but it makes sense because she was customized to be my supportive, shy girlfriend.

Unique Old-School Look

The first time I saw the Muah AI chat, I was immediately captivated by his old-school look. It's a simple window with nothing but a few options on the right, and it took me back to the old days of the '90s chatroom.

This old-school mystique is even felt in the way Jane, my shy girlfriend, reacted to my desperate request for her to send me a picture:

Her romantic description, floral dress, and beachy background reminded me immediately of another '90s phenomenon—Japanese City Pop! 

This unique old-school vibe may not sit well with some users, but it sure helps to set Muah AI apart.

Phone Features

Muah AI also takes pride in being one of the first AI services that includes a real-time phone feature. This means that users can chat with their companions via phone, which makes them look a whole lot more real.

Disadvantages of Muah AI

In terms of disadvantages, Muah AI lacks a free trial period for its VIP membership, which could help bring in a lot of undecided new customers. People would more easily adhere to the VIP membership if they tried it for themselves.

Another not-so-good thing I noticed was that there are formatting disparities in some of Muah AI's pages, which seem to have been optimized for mobile but disregarded desktop users. To be honest, however, this didn't impact my user experience in any relevant way.

The main disadvantage is perhaps the fact that Muah AI's phone features are inaccessible outside of the United States. Hopefully, this is but a temporary limitation.

Muah AI: Products and Features

Muah AI is still in the beta stage, meaning its focus is on developing a stellar main product before adding new features into the mix. Right now, Muah AI can be used for two purposes:

1. Customizing an AI companion with a great level of detail;
2. Chatting with such an AI companion.

It's a simple recipe, but a recipe for success nevertheless.

Summary

All things considered, Muah AI is a simple but secretly powerful AI tool that serves many purposes despite being nothing but a chat window with a character-creation engine.

I absolutely recommend using Muah AI if you're:

• Looking to chat with an online companion who feels real;
• Interested in creating and tweaking your own AI;
• Missing some much-needed love and support;
• Looking for affordable AI-generated pictures;
• Bored and trying to have some fun on the web.
