Blue Balls

What is Blue Balls?

Blue balls, also known as epididymal hypertension, refers to scrotal pain or a feeling of heaviness following prolonged sexual arousal without reaching orgasm and ejaculation.

The symptoms may include mild pain, discomfort, aching, heaviness, and occasionally a faint bluish color in the testes.

Understanding the Causes

During sexual arousal, the body directs blood into the penis and testicles. The veins that normally carry blood away from the area constrict, maintaining the blood to create an erection.

After ejaculation or when arousal diminishes, the blood flows out of the penis, returning it to a flaccid state. However, prolonged arousal without release can lead to the retention of excess blood, causing discomfort and pain.

Relief and Treatment

The most effective way to alleviate the discomfort is to either ejaculate or engage in non-arousing activities to distract oneself. It is not necessary to have a partner to relieve blue balls; masturbation alone can be sufficient.

Seeking Medical Attention

If sudden, severe pain occurs in the testicles, immediate medical assistance should be sought, as it could indicate testicular torsion. This condition arises when a testicle twists in the scrotum, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling.

Without prompt treatment, the testicle could become nonviable. Other potential causes of scrotal pain or discomfort include infections like epididymitis or injury. If persistent pain or discomfort in the testes or scrotum is experienced, consulting a doctor is advisable.
